3rd Annual JHS Alumni Reception
-------------------------------------------

The 3rd Annual JHS Alumni Reception will be held Saturday October 2nd, 2010 from 8 pm to 10 pm on Facebook with the JHS Alumni Association account Hootie Bubo. There will be Owls trivia, new pictures that have surfaced that have never been seen before, plus new historical details of the town and schools. Plus a story about the earliest school in Joshua (before the official schools). Since the posts/comments/suggestions cannot be monitored I would strongly urge parent discretion.

Homecoming Festivity information can be found at the school's web site here. A two minute video put together by the JHS Alumni Association is supposed to play on the video board before or during the football game. In the event it does not get displayed, you can watch it here by clicking the play button:

If you have items to donate (which will be returned to you) we are looking for all missing Yearbooks, all missing programs, any memorabilia and any historical information related to the schools and the town of Joshua. Click on the Contact Us link at the top right or bottom right of the site or call Randy at 817.501.0463. Go Owls!!!

New Information thanks to JHS Alumni in the 1940s-1970s:

Owl Stadiums

a.) Owl Stadium #1 [??? to ???] - located in the field adjacent to Staples Elementary on the south side of Main Street (old Highway 174)

b.) Owl Stadium #2 [??? to 1968] - located in the Owl Meadows along new Highway 174 next to the Administration Building

c.) Owl Stadium #3 [1969 to 2008] - previous stadium

d.) Owl Stadium #4 [2009 to Present] - brand new stadium

School Colors/Songs

a.) When Darrell Williams became Superintendent for the 1948-1949 school year, he said that he thought an owl would not be purple and gold...and he changed the school colors to blue and gray. As far as the JHS Alumni from the 1940s and 1950s can recall, the Joshua School Song was first played in the 1948-1949 school year. The word of the school song is the exact same song today except gray has been replaced with white.

b.) The Joshua Owls mascot was derived from the the Rice Owls. * From a Rice Owls historical web site: In 1912, Rice's first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, chose as the Rice school colors "a blue still deeper than the Oxford blue" and "the Confederate gray, enlivened by a tinge of lavender." When athletic activities began at The Rice Institute in 1912, the Rice intercollegiate teams adopted the owl as their mascot. Owls of Athena--symbolic of wisdom--were chosen for the charges. The Athenian owls on the Rice seal were patterned after a design found on a small, silver tetradrachmenon coin dating from the middle of the 5th century B.C.

1940s JHS Letter Jackets with Purple/Gold and Blue/Gray school colors

These two Joshua Letter Jackets are from the 1940s. The school colors from 1940 to the 1948-49 school year were Purple and Gold (on the right). The school colors changed to Blue and Gray for the 1949-50 school year (on the left). Notice on the bottom of the left Letter Jacket that it does not have the elastic with stripes at the bottom of the jacket. The school colors changed to Blue and White in ???.
